The Book on Understanding China

Indonesian university leaders and alumni reflect on the third volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China

The third volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China has been well received by local readers after its Chinese and English editions were released last year in countries neighboring China such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. Recently, leaders and alumni of Surya University and Surya College of Education, both renowned Indonesian private higher education institutions, shared their personal reflections on the book authored by Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Here, we present some selections from their writings.

Innovating for a Better Global Community

Dr. Pudji Untoro

Dean of the Engineering Department of Surya University, Member of the National Energy Council of Indonesia (2017-2019)

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s central ideas on transforming from “conventional” to a modern future system are well arranged in an inspiring way in this book. The future community should be prepared with not only good concepts but also a very powerful system so that implementation goes in accordance with plans. President Xi’s philosophy for a future global community is already planned and seeks to foster peaceful world unity and togetherness to meet people’s expectations for improved living standards. Xi advocates not only adopting a new common approach to security that is comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable, but also working together to craft a new security architecture that is equitable, fair, and beneficial to all.

For future economic globalization, he emphasized the possibility of narrowing or eliminating the persisting huge gap between north and south. More open, inclusive, and balanced policies should be implemented to foster common development of all peoples, inspired by the ancient Chinese philosophy, “All living things grow side by side without hurting each other: the sun, the moon, and the seasons rotate according to their own laws without hindering each other.”

Based on quick behavior changes globally, Xi explicitly highlighted the importance of pursuing innovation and mastering development of science and technology to fuel primary production forces and provide inexhaustible power for progress of human civilization. He also suggested seizing opportunities, increasing input on innovation, focusing on developing new growth areas, and replacing old growth drivers with new. Advanced structural reform through strengthening international cooperation in innovation should be supported by removing institutional barriers and energizing the market.

This book is a solid read containing real examples to illustrate how China developed so rapidly. It can be used as reference for other countries to emulate for future development and be adapted to their respective current situations. This book provides guidance for any nation to achieve its goals and improve its people’s welfare.

The Modern Governance Philosophy of President Xi

Dr. Lindawati

Rector of Surya University

Xi Jinping: The Governance of China Volume III excellently captures President Xi’s views on enhancing modern governance and innovation in global competition and placing more attention on reducing pollution to foster better quality of life for humanity.

President Xi has also fought hard for poverty elimination. This is a crucial step in solidifying China’s position as the world’s second largest economic player. Belt and Road cooperation will also play an important role in China’s economic and political development for decades to come. Production innovation is needed to reduce costs and improve quality to empower economic growth. Monumental results of Chinese innovation already benefiting people around the world include SARS NCov-2 vaccines, Beidou Navigation Satellite System, and new moon data acquired by the Chang’e 5 Mission.

“Innovation is the primary driving force of development,” declared President Xi in a speech. The successes of Chinese-style innovation management represent insightful research that should be studied not only by innovators but also leaders at large. The book Xi Jinping: The Governance of China Volume III features articles covering wide-ranging topics including domestic affairs, international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, and shared global problems as environmental issues. This book eloquently communicates the Chinese philosophy and characteristics of governance that resulted in the huge transformation and success in China that is seen today.

Xi Jinping Thought has become a cornerstone for China and its future. It is helping China embrace a new promising era of its long history. It’s no surprise that his ideas lifted China to become a leading country through marvelous achievements, breakthroughs, and innovations. The book Xi Jinping: The Governance of China Volume III captures how his thought is fueling skyrocketing growth in China today that will continue into the future.

The book will help Chinese people and global citizens alike learn several important things about China today. First, it deftly describes how Xi’s thought guides the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics, as well as the management of both China’s domestic and foreign affairs. Current socialism with Chinese characteristics and leadership strength of China today are fruit of his thought.

Second, the book paints a vivid picture of the impact of his thought on Chinese people and China’s fight against poverty. His ideas ensure the people of China are the masters of the country and represent a new way of thinking that strengthens China’s growth both domestically and globally. The same goes for the issue of poverty. His thought empowered the country to eliminate poverty while promoting a moderately prosperous society. In other words, his thought is reforming China.

Third, the book clearly communicates how his thought has pushed China to embrace all-around opening up, pursue high quality development, and promote harmony between human beings and nature. It has led China to engage in healthy cooperation with the global community with an aim of sharing the future by opening its arms wider to the world, striving for higher quality development, and caring for nature.

Finally, the book recounts stories of how Xi’s thought has helped China be welcomed globally and integrate into a global community of shared future. This work offers a clear window for the world’s societies to learn and know China today and in the future.

The Man Who Leads China’s Reform into a New Era

Saverinus Kaka

Vice Rector of Surya University

Over the last decade, China has emerged as a new global giant. China is hardly longer seen as a dominant developing country in the Asian region, but as a new world-pivoting force rising from the Asian region.

Such revolutionary change cannot be disassociated from Xi Jinping, the president of China since 2013. At its annual session in March 2018, the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature, adopted an amendment to the country’s Constitution, removing the expression that the president of the People’s Republic of China “shall serve no more than two consecutive terms.” Under the leadership of President Xi, brilliant achievements have been made on promoting development and satisfying the people’s need for better living standards. The constitutional revision addressed the Chinese people’s aspirations for long-lasting prosperity. Extension of the leadership’s term is expected to help consolidate China’s development achievements.

The English edition of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China Volume III from CIPG contains thoughts and concepts from Xi Jinping on reforming governance towards transforming China into a new force in various aspects of human life, especially in fields of economics, politics, socio-culture, technology, defense, and security. In the capable hands of Xi Jinping and nurtured by his revolutionary thought, China has become a new world-pivoting force.

In President Xi’s era, China has succeeded in alleviating poverty, developing the economy, advancing technology, and encouraging science and innovation. President Xi has also succeeded in carrying out bureaucratic reform in all sectors, fostering high-quality development, driving modernization of the economy, harmonizing nature and human life, optimizing diplomatic power to seek foreign cooperation, and building mutually beneficial cooperation in the global community to leave a better world for our children.

Xi Jinping’s philosophy on governance and his spectacular breakthroughs as outlined in this book have been highly influential on various groups around the world including politicians, scholars, experts, business leaders, and the other state officials. The book has prompted deeper studies of China’s successful development. Xi’s thoughts and ideas on governance provided guidance for China to grow into the world’s largest developing country with the strongest comprehensive strength.

After reading the book, I believe it is a solid source of inspiration and should be known to everyone, especially those managing governmental organizations or leading countries. It prioritizes development of leadership character to serve strong ambitions for national prosperity. We can learn a lot on how President Xi implemented his thoughts on socialism based on Chinese characteristics for a new era in Chinese society. The book provides an avenue for exploring China’s code of success in becoming a new superpower in Asia and the world.

Driving Human Development

Bryan Raharja

Alumnus of Surya University

China is now a leading innovation force in many sectors such as AI, smart manufacturing, fintech, electric vehicles, ICT, rare earth elements, and other realms. China’s success as a global innovation driver is closely related to its enormous growth of innovation capacity through development of research, leveraging the collective power of millions of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and machinery) graduates, and producing a massive volume of publications. Based on data from the World Economic Forum, China’s number of recent STEM graduates surpassed the US and India with 4.7 million STEM graduates in 2016. Humans are the key assets for a nation seeking prosperity and development. China has successfully developed its human resources and alleviated extreme poverty with a drop from 66 percent in 1990 to 0.5 percent in 2016.

President Xi stressed that the core indicator of poverty eradication efforts should be China’s ability to deliver the Two Assurances and Three Guarantees (assured food and clothing and guaranteed education access, medical services, and housing) by 2020. The achievement was made by investing in people, encouraging small producers to participate in rural markets, modernizing agriculture, and strengthening the social security system and vocational training to create job opportunities alongside fostering private sector engagement partnerships through e-commerce.

In the field of research, China has produced a high volume of papers and materials supporting science, chemistry, engineering, computer science, and mathematics. China produced the greatest number of scientific articles between 2016 and 2018, an average of 305,927 a year while the US averaged 281,487 papers. Research data points to the potential of valuable emerging intellectual property in the form of products and services. China wields advantages in innovation with the largest base of consumers, the strongest manufacturing ecosystem, extensive higher education infrastructure, and a large talent pool that enables rapid commercialization of new and sustainable ideas.
