A Moment with a Myanmar Language Teacher from the Cradle of Diplomats | China-Myanmar

“We will produce more students who have a good command of Myanmar language in the future and we’re still trying at present.” said with a smile by Ms. Zhao Jin, Myanmar language teacher and associate professor at BFSU.

After walking through the archway of BFSU or Beijing Foreign Studies University, neat buildings and a pool with flowers around are noticeably eye-catching to every passer-by.

The most interesting building is the library in the university campus. The façade of the library is decorated with the word “Library” in various foreign languages.

BFSU is one of the top universities in China and offers 83 international languages. There are Chinese students who major in Myanmar language at the university. Enthusiasm and passion can be seen on their faces.

Tr. Zhao Jin, who has been teaching those students and has 20 years of experience in teaching, is originally Chinese. She is currently teaching not only students from BFSU but also other people who want to learn Myanmar language.

She visits Myanmar at least once a year. Her Myanmar language fluency level is very high. She first arrived in Myanmar as a third-year student back in 1997 and studied there for a year. Then, she worked as a second secretary at Chinese embassy in Yangon, Myanmar from 2014 to 2017. At that time, she lived in Yangon with her family and she sent her son to an international school there. Now her son sometimes tells her that he misses Myanmar.

Chinese language universities are famous for their curriculums and teaching methodologies. BFSU, where Ms. Zhao Jin is currently teaching, started as a Russian language team and has already produced over 90,000 expats in languages and international affairs. Moreover, there are doctoral programs in foreign language and culture, Chinese language and culture, journalism, political science, law, science and industrial management in the university.

The teacher, who perceives the students should be taught not only language but also its culture and history. She has received a PhD. in 2017, her thesis was about “Bagan Culture”. (Bagan was a famous ancient kingdom in Myanmar)

“Myanmar people’s customs and traditions, mindset, perceptions and thoughts are basically based on Theravada Buddhism. That’s why Myanmar people are polite and kind-hearted. You can know more about the country of Myanmar after you learn Myanmar’s traditions.” said the teacher.

Ms. Zhao Jin has been a teacher in BFSU since she graduated from the same university in 1997. She also stressed that she is trying to produce more Myanmar language expats to promote mutual relations between China and Myanmar.

As she is originally from Bao Shan, Yunnan Province, she is not unfamiliar with Myanmar. She knew about Myanmar in her childhood.

 “I have known about Myanmar since I was very young. I used to envy Myanmar when I was young because most snacks, food and clothes we bought came from Myanmar. China was poor and it was difficult for people to find enough food. As there were only few local snacks, most snacks were imported from Myanmar. When I was young, I had neighbors whose relatives were living in Myanmar. I used to envy them because they had food and clothes sent by their relatives from Myanmar,” the teacher recalled.

As she has visited Myanmar several times, she’s been to Myanmar most famous attractions and tourist destinations. She expressed that her favorite thing about Myanmar is the beautiful environment. Currently she is learning about Myanmar’s ancient history, especially Pyu kingdom (Myanmar’s famous ancient kingdom).

 “I have read the poem called ‘Biao Guo Yue’ when I was young. I didn’t know this was where the Pyu Kingdom was. But I realized that it was an ancient kingdom in Myanmar after I learned Myanmar language,” she recalled.

She also said that they had many difficulties in learning Myanmar language because it was very difficult to get Myanmar books, magazines, and audio files before 2010. The main reasons were that there were few books published in Myanmar and her department did not have enough budget allocation to buy books before 2010. But now, it is getting easier and easier to get Myanmar books as many books are now being published in Myanmar and her department allocates enough budget to buy books.

According to the information provided by the official website of the university, over 400 ambassadors, over 1,000 consuls, diplomats, interpreters, translators, journalists, businessmen, lawyers and bankers have come out from this university. BFSU is also known as the “Cradle of Diplomats” as it has produced a lot of diplomats.

BFSU သို႔မဟုတ္ Beijing Foreign Studies University (ေဘဂ်င္းႏိုင္ငံျခားဘာသာေလ့လာေရး တကၠသိုလ္) မုခ္ဦးကေန ျဖတ္၀င္လိုက္ရင္ပဲ သပ္သပ္ရပ္ရပ္ ရွိေနတဲ့ အေဆာက္အဦးေတြရယ္၊ ေဘးပတ္လည္မွာ ပန္းေတြပြင့္ေနတဲ့ ေရကန္အငယ္စားေလးရယ္က သတိမထားမိဘဲ မေနႏုိင္ေအာင္ကို မ်က္စိပသာဒျဖစ္ေနပါတယ္။
ပိုၿပီး စိတ္၀င္စားဖို႔ေကာင္းတဲ့ေနရာကေတာ့ တကၠသုိလ္ထဲက စာၾကည့္တိုက္ပါပဲ။ စာၾကည့္တိုက္ ဆိုတဲ့ ေ၀ါဟာရကို ျမန္မာဘာသာအပါအ၀င္ ကမာၻေပၚကဘာသာေပါင္းမ်ဳိးစံုနဲ႔ အဂၤေတမွာ ထြင္းၿပီး စာၾကည့္တိုက္မ်က္ႏွာစာကို အလွဆင္ထားတာ ေတြ႕ရမွာျဖစ္ပါတယ္။
တ႐ုတ္ႏုိင္ငံမွာ အထင္ရွားဆံုးတကၠသိုလ္ေတြထဲက တစ္ခုျဖစ္ၿပီး ကမာၻ႔ဘာသာစကားေပါင္း ၈၃ မ်ဳိး သင္ၾကားေပးေနတဲ့ BFSU မွာ ျမန္မာစာအထူးျပဳနဲ႔ ေက်ာင္းတက္ေနၾကတဲ့ တ႐ုတ္ေက်ာင္းသား ေတြလည္း ရွိပါတယ္။ ပထမႏွစ္ ျမန္မာစာအထူးျပဳ အသက္ ၁၈၊ ၁၉ ၀န္းက်င္ တ႐ုတ္ေက်ာင္းသား ေက်ာင္းသူေလးေတြရဲ႕ မ်က္ႏွာေပၚမွာ စိတ္အားတက္ၾကြေနမႈကို အထင္းသား ေတြ႕ေနရပါတယ္။
ဒီေက်ာင္းသားေလးေတြကို ျမန္မာစာသင္ေပးေနတဲ့ ဆရာမေဒၚေစာၾကည္ကေတာ့ စာသင္သက္ ၂၁ ႏွစ္ ရွိေနၿပီျဖစ္ၿပီး တ႐ုတ္လူမ်ဳိးစစ္စစ္ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ဆရာမဟာ လက္ရွိ BFSU က ေက်ာင္းသားေတြ အျပင္ ျမန္မာစာေလ့လာခ်င္တဲ့ အျပင္က တျခားတ႐ုတ္လူမ်ဳိးေတြကိုလည္း ျမန္မာစာ သင္ၾကားေပး လ်က္ ရွိပါတယ္။
ဆရာမဟာ ျမန္မာႏုိင္ငံနဲ႔ တ႐ုတ္ႏုိင္ငံကို အနည္းဆံုး တစ္ႏွစ္တစ္ေခါက္ သြားေနတဲ့သူျဖစ္ၿပီး ျမန္မာစကားကို ျမန္မာတစ္ေယာက္နဲ႔မျခား ေခ်ာေခ်ာေမြ႔ေမြ႔ ေျပာႏုိင္သူလည္းျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ဆရာမ ေဒၚေစာၾကည္ဟာ ၁၉၉၇ ခုႏွစ္ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံမွာရွိတဲ့ ႏိုင္ငံျခားဘာသာတကၠသိုလ္မွာ ေက်ာင္းလာတက္ တုန္းက ပထမဆံုးအႀကိမ္အျဖစ္ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံကို ေရာက္ဖူးခဲ့တာျဖစ္ၿပီး ၁ ႏွစ္ၾကာ ေနထိုင္ခဲ့ပါတယ္။ အဲဒီေနာက္ ၂၀၁၄ ခုႏွစ္ကေန ၂၀၁၇ ခုႏွစ္အထိ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံမွာရွိတဲ့ တ႐ုတ္သံ႐ံုးမွာ ဒုတိယအတြင္း၀န္ အေနနဲ႔ တာ၀န္ထမ္းေဆာင္ခဲ့ပါတယ္။ အဲဒီတုန္းက သူ႔ရဲ႕မိသားစုနဲ႔အတူ ရန္ကုန္မွာ ေနထိုင္ခဲ့ၿပီး သူ႔ရဲ႕သားငယ္ေလးကိုလည္း ရန္ကုန္က international school တစ္ခုမွာ ေက်ာင္းထားေပးခဲ့ပါတယ္လို႔ ဆိုပါတယ္။
တ႐ုတ္ႏိုင္ငံက ဘာသာစကားတကၠသုိလ္ေတြဟာ ဘာသာစကားသင္ၾကားတဲ့ သင္႐ိုးညႊန္းတမ္း ေတြနဲ႔ပတ္သက္ရင္ နာမည္ႀကီးပါတယ္။ အခုလက္ရွိ ဆရာမေဒၚေစာၾကည္ စာသင္ေပးေနတဲ့ BFSU ဟာ ၁၉၄၁ ခုႏွစ္မွာ ႐ုရွားဘာသာစကားအဖြဲ႕အေနနဲ႔ စတင္ခဲ့တာျဖစ္ၿပီး ေက်ာင္းတည္ေထာင္ခ်ိန္ကေနစလို႔ ႏွစ္ေပါင္း ၇၀ ေက်ာ္အတြင္း ဘာသာစကားနဲ႔ ႏိုင္ငံတကာကၽြမ္းက်င္ ပညာရွင္ေပါင္း ၉ ေသာင္းေက်ာ္ကို ေမြးထုတ္ေပးထားၿပီးျဖစ္တယ္လို႔လည္း သိရပါတယ္။ ဒီတကၠသိုလ္မွာ ဘာသာစကားအျပင္ ႏိုင္ငံျခားဘာသာစကားနဲ႔စာေပ၊ တ႐ုတ္ဘာသာ စကားနဲ႔စာေပ၊ ဂ်ာနယ္လစ္ဇင္၊ ႏုိင္ငံေရးသိပံ၊ ဥပေဒ၊ သိပံနဲ႔ စက္မႈစီမံခန္႔ခြဲေရးဘာသာရပ္ေတြမွာ လည္း ေဒါက္တာဘြဲ႕အထိ သင္ၾကားေပးတဲ့ ပ႐ိုဂရမ္ေတြ ရွိေနတယ္လို႔ သိရပါတယ္။
ေက်ာင္းသားေတြကို ဘာသာစကားအျပင္ အဲဒီႏိုင္ငံရဲ႕ ယဥ္ေက်းမႈနဲ႔ သမိုင္းကိုလည္း သင္ေပးသင့္ တယ္လို႔ ခံယူထားတဲ့ ဆရာမေဒၚေစာၾကည္ဟာ ၂၀၁၇ ခုႏွစ္မွာ ပုဂံယဥ္ေက်းမႈဆိုတဲ့စာတမ္းနဲ႔ ေဒါက္တာဘြဲ႕ ရရွိခဲ့ပါတယ္။
“ျမန္မာလူမ်ိဳးရဲ႕ဓေလ့ထံုးစံေတြ၊ စိတ္ေနသေဘာထားေတြ၊ အေတြးအေခၚေတြက ေထရ၀ါဒ ဗုဒၶဘာသာနဲ႔ အမ်ားႀကီးသက္ဆိုင္ပါတယ္။ ဒါေၾကာင့္ျမန္မာလူမ်ိဳးေတြဟာ ယဥ္ေက်းသိမ္ေမြ႔တယ္၊ စိတ္္သေဘာထားေကာင္းတယ္။ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံကိုေလ့လာတဲ့အခါမွာ ျမန္မာယဥ္ေက်းမႈကို နားလည္မွ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံကို တကယ္နားလည္ႏိုင္မွာျဖစ္ပါတယ္” လို႔လည္း ဆရာမက ေျပာပါတယ္။
ဆရာမဟာ ၁၉၉၇ ခုႏွစ္မွာ ဒီေက်ာင္းကေနပဲ ျမန္မာစာအဓိကနဲ႔ ဘြဲ႕ရရွိခဲ့သူျဖစ္ၿပီး အဲဒီအခ်ိန္ကေနစလို႔ ဒီေက်ာင္းမွာ ဆရာမအျဖစ္ ျပန္လည္ လုပ္ကိုင္ေနခဲ့တာ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ျမန္မာနဲ႔ တ႐ုတ္ႏွစ္ႏုိင္ငံအၾကား အျပန္အလွန္ဆက္ဆံေရးကို ပိုမိုျမွင့္တင္ဖို႔အတြက္ အရည္အခ်င္းရွိၿပီး ျမန္မာစကားကၽြမ္းက်င္တဲ့ ေက်ာင္းသားေတြအမ်ားႀကီးကို ေမြးထုတ္ေပးဖို႔ ႀကိဳစားေနတယ္လို႔ ဆရာမက ဆိုပါတယ္။
ဆရာမဟာ ယူနန္ျပည္နယ္၊ ေပါက္စန္းၿမိဳ႕ (Bao Shan) ဇာတိျဖစ္လို႔ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံနဲ႔ မစိမ္းပါဘူး၊ ျမန္မာျပည္အေၾကာင္းကိုလည္း ငယ္ငယ္ေလးကတည္းက သိထားသူျဖစ္တဲ့အေၾကာင္း အခုလို ေျပာပါတယ္။
“က်မကေတာ့ ငယ္ငယ္ကတည္းက ျမန္မာျပည္ကိုသိတယ္၊ အားက်တယ္။ ဘာေၾကာင့္လဲ ဆိုေတာ့ က်မတို႔ငယ္ငယ္တုန္းကစားတဲ့ သေရစာေတြ၊ မုန္႔ေတြ၊ ၀တ္တဲ့အ၀တ္အစားေတြက ျမန္မာျပည္က လာတာမ်ားတယ္။ က်မငယ္ငယ္တုန္းက တရုတ္ျပည္က ဆင္းရဲတယ္။ ျပည္သူေတြ ၀ေအာင္စားတာေတာင္ခက္တယ္။ မုန္႔ေတြသေရစာေတြက သိပ္မရွိဘူး။ ဒါေၾကာင့္ ျမန္မာျပည္က သြင္းလာတဲ့မုန္႔ေတြပဲစားတာ မ်ားတယ္။ ဟိုတုန္းက အိမ္နီးခ်င္းေတြမွာ ျမန္မာျပည္မွာအမ်ိဳးရွိတဲ့ အိမ္ေတြရွိတယ္။ သူတို႔က ျမန္မာျပည္က ပို႔လာတဲ့အစားအစာေတြ၊ အ၀တ္အစားေတြ အျမဲရွိလို႔ သူတို႔ကို အရမ္းအားက်ပါတယ္။”
ဆရာမဟာ ျမန္မာျပည္ကို အႀကိမ္ႀကိမ္ေရာက္ဖူးသူျဖစ္တဲ့အျပင္ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံက အထင္ကရေနရာ ေတာ္ေတာ္မ်ားမ်ားကိုလည္း ႏွံ႔စပ္ေအာင္ေရာက္ဖူးသူျဖစ္ၿပီး ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံရဲ႕ သာယာလွပတဲ့ ပတ္၀န္းက်င္ကို အႀကိဳက္ဆံုးပဲလို႔ ဆိုပါတယ္။ လက္ရွိအခ်ိန္မွာ ဆရာမအေနနဲ႔ ျမန္မာေရွးေဟာင္း သမိုင္းကို ေလ့လာေနၿပီး ပ်ဴႏိုင္ငံေတာ္အေၾကာင္းကို အဓိကေလ့လာလ်က္ရွိပါတယ္။
“က်မငယ္ငယ္တုန္းက ပ်ဴေတးအသံ(Biao Guo Yue) ဆိုတဲ႔ကဗ်ာကိုဖတ္ဖူးတယ္။ ဟိုတုန္းက ပ်ဴႏိုင္ငံဆိုတာ ဘယ္ႏိုင္ငံလဲမသိဘူး။ ျမန္မာဘာသာသင္ၿပီးမွ ပ်ဴႏိုင္ငံဟာ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံမွာရွိတဲ့ ေရွးေဟာင္းႏိုင္ငံတစ္ႏိုင္ငံျဖစ္တယ္လို႔ က်မသိလာတယ္။” လို႔ ဆရာမက ဆိုပါတယ္။
၂၀၁၀ မတိုင္ခင္က ျမန္မာဘာသာကို သင္ယူရတာ အခက္အခဲေတြ အမ်ားႀကီး ရွိခဲ့ၿပီး စာအုပ္စာတမ္းေတြ၊ မဂၢဇင္းစာေစာင္ေတြ၊ အသံဖိုင္ေတြ ရဖို႔ ေတာ္ေတာ္ေလးကို ခက္ခဲခဲ့တယ္လို႔ ဆရာမက ျပန္ေျပာင္း ေျပာျပပါတယ္။ အဓိက အေၾကာင္းကေတာ့ ၂၀၁၀ မတုိင္ခင္ကာလတုန္းက ျမန္မာႏုိင္ငံမွာ ထြက္ရွိတဲ့ စာအုပ္စာတမ္းေတြ နည္းပါးခဲ့တာလည္း ပါသလုိ ေက်ာင္းက ဘတ္ဂ်တ္ ခ်ေပးတာလည္း နည္းပါးခဲ့တာ ပါပါတယ္။ အခုေတာ့ ေက်ာင္းက စာအုပ္၀ယ္ဖို႔ ဘတ္ဂ်တ္ေတြ ပိုၿပီးခ်ေပးလာသလုိ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံကလည္း စာအုပ္ေတြ ပိုထုတ္လာၾကတဲ့ အတြက္ အဆင္ေျပလာတယ္ လို႔ ဆရာမက ေျပာပါတယ္။
BFSU တကၠသိုလ္ရဲ႕ တရား၀င္၀က္ဘ္ဆုိဒ္မွာ ေဖာ္ျပထားတဲ့အခ်က္အလက္ေတြအရဆိုရင္ ဒီတကၠသိုလ္ကေန သံအမတ္ႀကီးေပါင္း ၄၀၀ ေက်ာ္နဲ႔ ေကာင္စစ္၀န္ေပါင္း ၁၀၀၀ ေက်ာ္အျပင္ သံတမန္ေတြ၊ စကားျပန္/ဘာသာျပန္ေတြ၊ ဂ်ာနယ္လစ္ေတြ၊ စီးပြားေရးသမားေတြ၊ ဥပေဒပညာရွင္ေတြနဲ႔ ဘဏ္လုပ္ငန္းရွင္ေတြလည္း ေမြးထုတ္ေပးႏုိင္ခဲ့တယ္လို႔ သိရပါတယ္။ သံတမန္ေပါင္းမ်ားစြာကို ေမြးထုတ္ေပးတဲ့ တကၠသိုလ္ ျဖစ္လို႔ BFSU ဟာ “Cradle of Diplomats” (သံတမန္မ်ားရဲ႕ဘူမိနက္သန္) လို႔ေတာင္ လူသိမ်ားပါတယ္။
